Exclusive vs Shared Leads: Which Is Better for Your Business?
An exclusive lead costs more per lead and is delivered to one contractor. A shared lead costs less and is delivered to several. Which is better depends on one number: how much more often you win an exclusive lead.
Lead prices are published by trade on the contractor signup page. You pay only when a lead is delivered, from a prepaid balance.
The break-even rule
Exclusive leads win on cost per booked job when exclusive price divided by shared price is less than your exclusive close rate divided by your shared close rate.
Example, using made-up numbers to show the math: if an exclusive lead costs 3 times a shared lead, you need to close more than 3 times as often on exclusive leads to come out ahead. If you close 10 percent of shared leads, you would need to close more than 30 percent of exclusive leads.
When shared leads make sense
- You are fast on the phone and good at beating competitors to the first conversation.
- Your jobs are lower-ticket and you need volume.
- You want to test a new area at low cost.
When exclusive leads make sense
- Your average job is large (roofing, additions, new home building, hardscaping) and one extra win pays for many leads.
- Your sales process is slower and you do not want to race.
- You want a homeowner who is not also hearing from two other contractors.
