Kitchen Remodel Contractors in Houston, TX

Houston is one of the most active kitchen renovation markets in the country, driven by a strong housing stock, a culture of entertaining, and homeowners who have lived through flood events and want to modernize aging kitchens while addressing underlying structural and utility issues. ProMatch connects Houston homeowners with licensed kitchen remodel contractors who understand local permitting requirements, the city's unique soil and foundation considerations, and the styles that resonate in Houston's diverse neighborhoods.

Kitchen Renovation in Houston: Local Context Matters

Houston's residential neighborhoods span a wide range of home ages and styles. Older inner-loop neighborhoods like The Heights, Montrose, and Eastwood are filled with bungalows and craftsman homes from the 1920s-1940s where kitchen remodels often involve opening up walls, updating galvanized plumbing, and rewiring for modern appliance loads. Newer master-planned communities in Sugar Land, Katy, and The Woodlands typically involve updating builder-grade finishes in homes built in the 1990s-2010s — replacing laminate with quartz, swapping stock cabinets for semi-custom, and installing higher-end appliance packages.

Houston operates under a unique regulatory environment: it is the largest US city without traditional zoning. However, kitchen remodels still require permits for structural work, electrical upgrades, and plumbing modifications. All ProMatch contractors are licensed with the City of Houston and familiar with the permitting process through the Houston Permitting Center.

What Houston Kitchen Remodels Typically Include

Cabinet Replacement and Refacing

Cabinets are typically the single largest line item in a kitchen remodel. Full custom cabinetry from local Houston fabricators runs $500-$1,500 per linear foot installed. Semi-custom cabinets from national suppliers are the most popular choice in Houston at $200-$800 per linear foot. Refacing — replacing doors and drawer fronts while keeping existing box construction — is a cost-effective option when the layout is working well and the boxes are structurally sound, typically running 40-50% less than full replacement.

Countertop Installation

Quartz has overtaken granite as the most popular countertop material in Houston due to its non-porous surface (important in a humid climate), consistent appearance, and low maintenance requirements. Quartzite and marble remain popular in higher-end River Oaks and Memorial renovations. Butcher block is a growing choice in Heights and Montrose bungalow renovations for its warmth and period-appropriate aesthetic.

Layout Changes and Structural Work

Opening a kitchen to the living or dining area — removing a wall to create an open floor plan — is one of the most requested scope items in Houston renovations. This work typically involves determining whether the wall is load-bearing (common in older Houston homes with pier-and-beam foundations), engineering a proper beam if needed, and updating electrical and HVAC runs that pass through the wall. ProMatch contractors include licensed general contractors who handle full scope projects including structural modifications.

A cosmetic kitchen refresh — new countertops, paint, hardware, and light fixtures — typically runs $8,000-$20,000 in Houston.
